Can
Gio was previously a part of
Dong Nai province before being
merged into Ho Chi Minh City
in 1978.
In
1979, the city launched a reforestation
in Can Gio. The main workforce
was volunteer youths and youths
subject to re-education. After
that, the resurrected forest
was divided into many sub-areas
allotted to district authorities
of the city to administer and
use as re-education centers.
At the end of 1998, the People’s
Committee and Party’s Committee
of District 11 handed sub-area
15 under its administration
over to Phu Tho Tourist Company
for forming a tourist zone investment
plan (Decision 101/QD-UB dated
31 December 1998). With available
material and manpower resource,
Phu Tho Tourist Company constructed
some more works, yet retained
the natural status quo and grew
more trees where necessary.
